When we’re in the midst of change sometimes we lose a sense of where we are; a “don’t know whether I’m coming or going” feeling. Perhaps things feel a bit all over the place or wobbly.
With this in mind this reflection exercise is intended to support you to:
- Develop deeper understanding on where you are now
- Suss out how recent shifts – big or small – have impacted you
- Move forward in a way that’s aligned
Approximate time to complete: 15 minutes
Before you get started
- Find a place you won’t be interrupted and something to write with, and make yourself comfortable
- Which of these qualities stand out that you would like to bring to this exercise? Health / curiosity / kindness / energy / ease / compassion / spaciousness – something else?
- Write down your responses to the questions below, following it through to the end if you feel up to it
- Feel free to skip or dwell on questions or prompts, all are offered as invitation rather than an instruction
- Remember: This exercise is not a test of anything or anyone – there are no right or wrong answers, just what’s true for you
In this moment
- To start, describe or draw five things that are around you. Objects, colours, smells, sounds – whatever comes to your senses
- What’s your favourite object in the room? What do you like about it?
- Now close your eyes and take three deeper breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth (if you feel comfortable doing so)
- What’s on your mind today?
- On a scale of 1 (not at all) to 5 (very), how energised do you feel?
- What colour or shape would you use to describe your current mood?
- And how is your body feeling?
Looking back
- What external shifts have you experienced, or made happen, in the last few months?
- On the whole, how has this left you feeling?
- What about these changes has been most welcome?
- And what has been less welcome?
- What has happened that’s been unexpected?
- Of all the big or small things you’ve done over the last few months, what are you most proud of?
Looking ahead
- How would you say you are feeling about the next month?
- What does your body need to support you through the weeks ahead?
- What have you learnt recently that you’d like to take forward with you?
- Of the changes you’ve made recently, are there any you’d like to grow or maintain?
- Is there anything you intend to do more of in the next month?
- Is there anything you intend to do less of in the next month?
And finally…
- Take three deeper breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth
- Close your eyes, place a palm in the middle of your chest and listen to any words or feelings that come up
- How do you feel now?
- Take a moment to notice your favourite object in the room
- What about this exercise have you found useful?
- And you’re done
- If you can, take a bit of time out now to let what you’ve been reflecting on settle
