Answer the questions below to help you decide which work habit you’d like to change. By taking the time to design your habit to be doable, enjoyable and impactful you’re much more likely to be successful in making your habit happen.
These questions accompany the month of free support I offer to change a work habit, if you haven’t signed up for this, you can do that here.
To start
- Decide how you’d like to approach this – would you like to type, speak or write your answers?
- Take a moment to check in – responding to what you might need in this moment: perhaps a drink, movement or more warmth, I invite you to meet your needs before you get started
Design your work habit questions
- What would you like to be different about how you feel at work? Respond to the sentence: “I’d like to feel more…” and see what comes up
- What small changes might help achieve this? Make a list of all your ideas – all are welcome
- Choose one new habit from these small changes that you’d like to try out
- How could you make the habit easier? (think smaller, shorter)
- How could you make the habit more enjoyable and energising?
- Based on your ideas, check you’ve landed on a habit that feels:
- Easy enough to do
- Enjoyable enough to look forward to
- Impactful enough to make a small positive difference
- Do you feel your new habit is very doable and appealing? If yes, great. If not, how could it be made this way?
- Decide when you’ll do your new habit – get very specific and fill in this formula: “On (this day/date) I will start (your habit), I will do the habit (this often) and I will do the habit after / before I (another thing you do habitually e.g. close my laptop, have lunch, have breakfast etc.)”
- Choose three words that sum up how it would feel to do this new habit
- Write your three words and habit formula on a post-it or scrap of paper
- Place the piece of paper somewhere you’ll see it every day
I hope you’ve found these prompts helpful. Remember – a small thing done often is better than a big thing not done at all. We tend to think about impact over “do-ability” when we decide on making a habit change – we want your habit to be impactful and easy.
Now it’s time to give your new habit a go, and I wish you well experimenting!
